Tinder Fotomaton & Tinder Letter

Tinder Fotomaton & Tinder Letter, 2022, Riso prints, video, face filters on Instgram and digital-selfportrait on Tinder

Swiping love!

Swiping through other people’s profiles on dating apps grants the power to choose a person based on their appearance while simultaneously subjecting my own profile to judgment from other users. Selecting a person is the same as shopping for merchandise, where the packaging design plays a crucial role. At first glance, we assess aspects such as the design, price, ingredients and nutritions of products and the location of manufacture. In a similar way When browsing profiles, we consider factors such as photos, age, occupation, hobbies, Instagram presence, and religious background.

💕
One day, I came across an eerie Tinder profile, it was photos of a computer screen displaying letters with tiny font size. I took screenshots and zoomed in to read everything. I could sense the writer’s loneliness and desperation. He was a programmer, 35 years old and lives in Seoul, Korea.

After a few experiences and experiments on Tinder, I use Tinder as my virtual exhibition space. I photoshopped my profile pictures in a style of Scold’s Bridle and transformed them into 5 of 3D face filters with a texture of the user’s facial flesh for Instagram and Facebook using Spark AR Studio, to  provide comfortable selfie face filters for people on Tinder. Furthermore, I edited the screenshots of filters and printed them on Riso to create tangible versions.
